Our Story

Our Love Story

Every great love story has a beginning. Ours just had a few fun false starts.

In May of 2023, John reached out to Alexa with an invitation to Ethiopian dinner. She didn’t respond. Undeterred, he followed up with coffee and sailing, which she met with a bold “Who are you?” and he confidently replied “…You can call me husband…” Alexa immediately blocked him.

In September of 2024, fate (and international travel) brought them both to South Africa. John made his case again: Nobu at the One & Only, a helicopter ride over Cape Town, dinner at the Silo, and, finally, coffee at Ellerman House to which Alexa agreed! Their paths were destined to cross, but not there. Alexa ghosted John.

Destiny is persistent. And so is John.

A year later, in October 2025, Alexa posted from Paws Up. John commented. Alexa replied. What began as playful debate about ranch preferences (Alexa loved Brush Creek) turned into something neither expected. When John asked for her number, Alexa—mildly entertained and recovering from Covid—said yes.

Everything shifted. They talked for hours every night. The connection felt instant and easy. Before Alexa left to lead a trip in Chile, John asked her to be his hypothetical girlfriend. Long texts, quick calls across time zones, a connection that deepened with oceans between them.

The moment she returned, she flew to her hometown of Newport Beach to meet him in person. John met her at The Resort at Pelican Hill and secretly had three giant bouquets of flowers and a handful of thoughtful gifts he'd arranged to be placed in the room. She jumped at the sight of them. Their first date was a Michelin sushi dinner at Rebel Omakase. By the end of the week, it was clear: this was real. John packed up his car and drove to Park City to be with her.

A week later John celebrated Alexa’s birthday with her and her parents in Napa Valley, moving through wineries and Michelin-starred tables with the ease of two people falling into rhythm. After meeting Alexa’s entire family, Alexa began to wonder: why haven’t I met his? So, they booked a flight to Sacramento for New Year’s Eve. There, over stories and laughter, John’s mom and sister won her over completely. By midnight, she was convinced—he was the real deal.

Momentum held strong. After six weeks in Park City, John had to relocate to Chicago for work and the long-distance chapter began. Alexa flew out and quickly discovered Chicago winters are no joke, but the restaurant scene helped make up for it.

The next big adventure brought them to Italy in March, traveling with her parents from Bologna to Massimo Bottura’s Casa Maria Luigia, then ending the trip at the enchanting Castello di Reschio finding a shared love of gelato.

Soon after, they reunited in Palm Beach for Easter where things took an unexpected turn. Things started well with Alexa meeting John’s Dad, Michael, and exploring the island with Kenly. The final event was an amazing polo championship with John's aunt, Lily, where John ate questionable buffet crab… very early the next morning what followed can only be described as a horror scene for someone with emetophobia – as John battled food poisoning, Alexa gratefully prepared to dash for her flight - but before she did, she defied every instinct and stepped into the bathroom to say goodbye. That’s when she knew: he’s the one.

Not long after, John secretly asked Alexa’s parents and sister for their blessing. Her mother, Robyn, offered her own engagement ring to repurpose. It was a generous and loving gesture — and only part of the story.

John had the diamond reset into a custom ring, flanked by two heirloom diamonds from his mother's engagement ring—stones that had been passed down from his paternal grandmother, and from her mother before that. Four generations of love, legacy, and intention—all carried into a single band for a new chapter.

He had the ring completed in twenty-four hours.

Inside the band, he engraved a message just for Alexa: “Yes love, Moxie approved.”

With the ring in hand, John and Alexa flew to Adare Manor in Ireland to ask the question it had taken two years, four countries, three ghosting's, and one very unfortunate buffet to arrive at.

While staying at Adare Manor, John planned a moment straight out of a fairytale. A horse-drawn carriage led Alexa through the estate’s gardens, where violists waited, playing softly beneath the trees. Just as she stepped into the clearing, a falcon swooped in and landed gracefully on her arm—carrying the ring that would begin their forever.

She said yes.
